Derek Brown is currently wrapping up his fifth and final year as a defenceman on the Carleton Ravens men’s hockey team.

Brown began his university hockey career in the 2013-2014 season after playing for two seasons for the Ottawa Jr. Senators of the Central Canada Hockey League (CCHL).

Throughout his time at Carleton, Brown has played in 91 games and notched 24 assists.

“It’s been a fun five years and that’s definitely in the back of my head and like I love playing here and really the only focus I have is just on playoffs and going as far as we can,” Brown said about his thoughts about his final season coming to an end.

Throughout 26 games played this season, the Ravens are sitting 3rd place in the Ontario University Athletics (OUA) East division with a 16-6-4 record and 36 points, nine points back from the first place McGill Redmen.

“It would mean the world to me, I mean, that’s what everyone’s goal is at the beginning of the year, kind of go there and then go to Nationals, so it would be great in my last year to finally win. I’ve got two bronzes, so it would be nice to add to those with a gold,” Brown said of his goal to make it to Nationals this year.

For the past 3 years in a row, the University du Quebec a Trois-Rivieres (UQTR) have eliminated Carleton from the playoffs.

“As a Raven, I would say probably going to Nationals both years in my first and third year. Halifax was incredible and it was a tough pill to swallow losing in quadruple overtime. But definitely the guys I’ve met and coming to the rink every day and the friendships I’ll have for the rest of my life,” Brown said about his most memorable moments as a Raven.

Brown, along with the rest of his hockey team, is getting set to enter the playoffs as they wrap up their two final regular season games on Feb. 9th and 10th as they take on UQTR and the Concordia Stingers.
